It is expected that the tournament will return to Queensland in 2022, but the 2021 edition will be held in the state of Victoria.

This is due to the state's biggest city, Melbourne, also hosting the Australian Open in January.

Brisbane Tennis organisers released a statement explaining the logistical challenges created by the pandemic.

In Australia, states and territories have different restrictions, with out-of-state travel cut back.

The latest update from the Australian Government shows just six new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from nearly 40,000 tests, and there are only an estimated 80 active cases across the country.

"This tough decision has been made because of the restrictions in every state and territory which make it impossible for the players to prepare properly for the first Grand Slam of the year, and for us to run our event in a safe way for the Queensland community," said Mark Handley, the Brisbane International tournament director.

"Fortunately, we still have an Australian summer of tennis with the Australian Open and lead in events to be played in Victoria.

"We understand this is disappointing news, particularly for our dedicated fans, the Brisbane tennis family.

"We hope, however, you are energised by the fact the Australian Open will go ahead as planned and the world's best players will start 2021 in Australia."

Other warm-up events in Hobart on the island on Tasmania and in Adelaide in South Australia will also be moved to Victoria.
