UEFA has issued a life ban to former Qarabağ FK press officer Nurlan Ibrahimov for racist behaviour on social media.

UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body decided to ban Ibrahimov from all football-related activity after he allegedly made racist comments about Armenians in a social media post.

At the time, Qarabağ FK distanced themselves from Ibrahimov's comments and opened an internal disciplinary case against the press officer.

They also claimed Ibrahimov had been traumatised while watching footage of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and regretted his comments.

The Football Federation of Armenia had called for Qarabağ FK to be expelled from European football for the post.

Ibrahimov's comments were made during the conflict between Azerbaijan’s armed forces and ethnic Armenian forces over the mountain enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Artsakh.

Hundreds are thought to have died during the fighting in the region, which is inside Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since 1994.

The fighting, which broke out on September 27, is the worst between the two countries since a six-year war over the territory ended with a ceasefire in 1994.

As a result of the ongoing conflict in the territory, UEFA's Executive Committee decided Azerbaijan and Armenia cannot stage competitions at home "until further notice".

The respective federations in the two countries will be asked to propose alternative venues for their matches in UEFA tournaments, including the Nations League and the Europa League.

UEFA is continuing with plans to hold matches at next year's European Championship in the the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, however.

Qarabağ FK were founded in 1951 in the city of Aghdam, located in Nagorno-Karabakh and today abandoned, with the club now situated in Baku.

They are considered to be the leading football team in Azerbaijan and competed in the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2017-2018.

This season the club is competing in the Europa League, but have played recent matches in Istanbul's Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium as a result of the UEFA ruling.
