Olympic bronze medallist Dawid Kubacki laid down a marker in Ruka as he registered the biggest distance in qualifying for the International Ski Federation Ski Jumping World Cup event.

Kubacki of Poland recorded 103 metres in today’s first training run before jumping 135.5m to clinch top spot with 134.1 points at the Finnish resort.

The 30-year-old, who won bronze in the team event at Pyeongchang 2018, finished fourth overall last season and came out on top in the Four Hills Tournament.

German Karl Geiger, who finished second in last week's season-opener in Wisla in Poland, produced an assured display in qualifying as he was the nearest challenger to Kubacki with 130.3.

Both Geiger and Norwegian Halvor Egner Granerud landed on 132m, with the latter registering 128.7 from the judges to come third.

Yukiya Sato of Japan came fourth with 123.6 while Piotr Zyla ensured another Pole was in the top five as he earned 122.6.

Markus Eisenbichler, who holds the yellow bib after winning in Wisla, came sixth after landing on 126m – 10 metres short of Kubacki’s mark – to collect 118.3, level with German compatriot Pius Paschke.

The field of 64 competitors was reduced to 50 with America’s contingent of Casey Larson and Andrew Urlaub among those to fail to qualify.

The first individual event is scheduled to take place tomorrow, followed by another on November 29.
