World Triathlon is set to propose an additional four Paratriathlon medal events for inclusion at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

The worldwide body is putting forward its full slate of six events for men and six for women in the programme it is submitting to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Its proposal includes all eight Paratriathlon events due to feature at next year's postponed Tokyo 2020 Paralympics - wheelchair, visually impaired and PTS5 for men and women, the men's PTS4 and the women's PTS2.

The men's PTS2 and PTS3, and the women's PTS3 and PTS4, have also been proposed.

Should the IPC accept World Triathlon's programme, a total of 12 Paratriathlon medal events would be contested at Paris 2024, a rise of four from Tokyo 2020 and six from Rio 2016, when the sport made its Paralympic debut.

The World Triathlon Paratriathlon Committee has admitted the organisation only just met the IPC criteria for Paralympic events, which state they must have a minimum of 32 regular practising nations.

"These numbers were not easy to meet and are at risk," the Committee, which recommended the World Triathlon Executive Board propose all 12 Paratriathlon events, wrote in its report to Congress.

"Several nations with developing Paratriathlon programmes were unable to take part in 2020 due to COVID-19.

"We need to further support these developing nations and encourage additional National Federations, so the required numbers are met consistently."

The World Triathlon Paratriathlon Committee has also conceded more work is needed on the women's PTS3 category to ensure it adheres to the IPC requirements as it does not meet the criteria.

"Based on guiding principles of gender equity in triathlon, the Paratriathlon Committee recommends the Executive Board to push for the full programme as additional action items can be implemented to ensure we meet the IPC criteria by 2024 for the female PTS3 medal event," it added.

"However, the decision from the IPC will be made by early 2021 and an alternative proposal may need to be considered."
