The inaugural Virtus Oceania Asia Games in 2022 are set to take place in Brisbane after Australia won the bid to host the competition.

Sport Inclusion Australia will organise the event which is scheduled to take place from November 5 to 12.

Their successful bid will follow on from when the city hosted the Global Games in 2019, under Virtus' former name, the International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (INAS).

Virtus said that the city's hosting of the INAS Games had raised the awareness of inclusive sports.

The announcement on the 2022 event was made to coincide with the International Day of People With Disabilities today.

Virtus executive director Nick Parr wished the organisers luck and hopes for the success of the Oceania Asia Games in two years' time.

"As advocates and champions for athletes with an intellectual impairment, I hope you engage your Governments, sporting organisations and partners to make the Oceania Asia Games 2022 another successful Virtus event," he said.

"Hopefully, we will see new rising stars emerge and welcome new members from other Asia and Oceania countries, and perhaps even our first Pacific nation.

"I also have every confidence that our growing collective knowledge and experience with delivering a high-standard, elite, multi-sport event will lead us strongly into the next regional Games."
