In the opening match of the day, Serbian side Liman started off their campaign well with a victory over Mongolia's Ulanbaatar MMC Energy, winning 20-16 in Pool A.

They followed this win up with a tight 20-19 victory over fellow Serbians, Ub, to ensure they finished top of the group.

Fellow Serbian side, fourth-ranked Novi Sad, enjoyed a narrow win against Switzerland's Lausanne, winning 19-16 in Pool B.

They became the second Serbian side to reach the quarter-finals of the competition following a low-scoring 17-13 victory over Amsterdam of The Netherlands, which was enough for them to top the group.

Novi Sad is joined in the last eight from Pool B by Amsterdam who beat Lausanne 15-10 in the final group match.

Latvia's Riga, who sit top of the overall standings on level points with Liman, were made to work hard for their win, only just overcoming the hosts Jeddah by a single point in a 22-21 win in Pool C as they pulled off a fantastic comeback.

A second match ensured their qualification with an exciting final minute against Slovenia's Piran, as Riga won 18-16.

Hosts Jeddah ensured their progress from Pool C by defeating Piran 19-15 in the final group match of the night.

Pool D started off with a win for Lithuania's Utena, as they defeated third seeds NY Harlem of the United States 21-16.
