Ukraine claimed gold in a thrilling conclusion to the team event on day three of the European Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Mersin in Turkey.

The team of Anastasiia Bachynska, Yelyzaveta Hubareva, Anastasiia Motak, Angelina Radivilova and Diana Varinska capitalised on some errors from the Romanian team to win the team title with a score of 154.663.

Romania were exceptional in the vault, beam and floor disciplines, but mistakes on the bars relegated them to second.

Larisa Iordache, an Olympic team bronze medallist and five-time European champion, was integral to her team's efforts - finishing in the top four of every event.

She was backed by Antonia Duta, Silviana Sfiringu, Ioana Stanciulescu and Daniela Trica; with the quintet scoring 154.496, having lost the lead on the second rotation and despite efforts to come back; they narrowly missed out.

Hungary's team of Csenge Maria Bacskay, Dorina Böczögő, Zsofia Kovacs, Mirtill Makovits and Zoja Szekely were clear in third place with a total of 151.597.

Turkey were far behind with a total of 143.795 in fourth, followed by the Czech Republic and Croatia in fifth and sixth place.

Tomorrow sees the apparatus finals take place on the final day of competition.
