Olympic silver and bronze medallist in Alpine skiing, Andrew Weibrecht, is set to help re-launch Paul Smith's College's skiing programme in Upstate New York.

The American skier, who won silver at Sochi 2014 in the super-G and bronze in the same event at Vancouver 2010, will play a lead role in assisting the college to create a new programme.

Paul Smith's College recently added Nordic skiing, biathlon, hockey, trap shooting and esports to its programme and now Alpine skiing is set to return in the 2021-2022 season.

The university was one of the dominant American institutions in the sport during the 1980s and 1990s, with the school winning the National Junior College Championship in 1991.

Its legacy goes back to 1952, when it hosted the United States Olympic trials prior to the Winter Olympics in Oslo in Norway.

Weibrecht is a three-time Olympian and has 16 years of national and international experience within the United States Ski Team.

Members of the men's and women's team will be able to train and compete at Whiteface, the mountain which hosted Alpine skiing at the Lake Placid 1980 Games.

"Having a programme that's catered towards that, both online and in-residence, is really sellable to a lot of families," said Weibrecht.

"The Division I world has gotten crazy competitive, both admissions into these colleges and getting slots on the team which often go hand-in-hand.

"If you're being recruited by the team, it does help you get into the school itself."

Weibrecht is one of five Olympians on Paul Smith's College's Olympic Advisory Council.

It plans to work with the New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF), which is a gold-certified club by US Ski and Snowboard.

It is one of the original eight gold clubs and has specialised in snowsport instruction since 1973.

"We look forward to partnering with Paul Smith's to provide a supportive environment for another successful ski programme in the area," said John Norton, NYSEF executive director and Alpine programme director.

NYSEF provides athlete lodge facilities and training venues at Whiteface in partnership with the Olympic Regional Development Authority.
