Kiribati National Olympic Committee (KNOC) President Nicholas McDermott has met with the country's Minister for Women, Youth, Sports and Social Affairs, Martin Moreti.

The role of the KNOC and the Government's support for Kiribati's participation in international competitions was discussed at a dinner meeting between Moreti, McDermott and other KNOC officials.

How best to achieve sustainable development goals was also examined, the National Olympic Committee said. 

It was added that the KNOC looks forward to working in collaboration with the Minister's sports division on initiatives which will benefit Kiribati's athletes.

The KNOC achieved International Olympic Committee recognition in 2003, and Kiribati first appeared at an Olympics at Athens 2004.

Kiribati has sent athletes to every Summer Games since.

The KNOC also serves as the nation's Commonwealth Games Association. 

Weightlifter David Katoatau, a three-time Olympic flagbearer, who Kiribati's first Commonwealth Games medal at Glasgow 2014, winning the men's under-105-kilogram contest.
