The top seeds in the men’s and women’s singles, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and Carolina Marin of Spain, were among the winners as the line-ups for the last four were decided at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Yonex Swiss Open in Basel.

Quarter-final action took place in the men’s and women’s singles and men’s, women’s and mixed doubles on a busy day at the St Jakobshalle which saw 20 matches completed across three courts.

In the men’s singles, top seed Axelsen continued his smooth progress as he beat Shesar Hiren Rhustavito, the seventh seed from Indonesia 21-17, 21-12.

Second seed Zii Jia Lee of Malaysia also triumphed in straight games beating Sai Praneeth of India, the fifth seed, 21-14, 21-17.

The other two men’s singles quarter-finals also went to form with fourth seed Kidambi Srikanth of India beating sixth seed Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand 21-19, 21-15, and Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the eighth seed from Malaysia beating Ajay Jayaram of India 21-9, 21-6.

In the women’s singles top seed Marin won in straight games beating Beiwen Zhang of the United States 21-13, 21-13.

The top four seeds are the four remaining players in the women’s singles with second seed Pusarla Sindhu of India triumphant 21-16, 23-21 against Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand, the fifth seed.

Third seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand won 21-11, 21-15 against Line Christophersen of Denmark and the pattern of straight games wins for the higher ranked players continued when fourth seed Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark won 21-10, 21-7 against Phittayaporn Chaiwan of Thailand.

In the doubles draws, the men’s event saw both of the top two seeds taken to straight games before reaching the last four.

Top seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia won 21-18, 9-21, 21-16 against Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin of Indonesia while second seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty of India beat fifth seeds Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi of Malaysia 12-21, 21-19, 21-12.  

In the women’s doubles top seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai of Thailand won 21-19, 21-13 against eighth seeds Selena Piek and Cheryl Seinen of the Netherlands.

One quarter-final that did go against the form book saw fourth seeds Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie beaten 14-21, 21-14, 21-19 by French sixth seeds Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue.

In the mixed doubles, the standout quarter-final saw top seeds Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying beaten 14-21, 21-19, 21-15 by unseeded Danish pair Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje.

The semi-finals are scheduled to take place across all categories tomorrow.
