Evandro Gonçalves Oliveira Júnior and Gustavo Albrecht Carvalhaes overcame top seeds and world champions Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Viacheslav Krasilnikov at the Katara Beach Volleyball Cup in Doha.

Brazil's Evandro and Guto got past their Russian opponents in two sets at the Al Gharrafa Sports Complex, triumphing 21-13, 22-20.

Both pairs had entered the clash having won their opening matches in Pool A.

Evandro and Guto came back from one set down to win 19-21, 21-18, 16-14 against Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak of Poland.

Stoyanovskiy and Krasilnikov had thrashed Qatari wildcards Assam Ahmed Mahmoud and Abdallah Ibrahim Nassim 21-13, 21-16.

The top seeds in the women's contest - Canada's reigning world champions Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes - enjoyed more success.

They first won 21-14, 21-16, against Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré, with the Swiss pair making their debut at a four-star International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach World Tour event.

Pavan and Humana-Paredes faced a tougher challenge against Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil of the United States, but still triumphed 24-22, 18-21, 16-14.

Pool competition is scheduled to continue tomorrow.

Action is taking place in the Qatari capital in a bio secure bubble, with strict COVID-19 regulations in place.

The FIVB confirmed a Swiss player returned a positive in-competition test on March 6 and is now in self-isolation.

Those he was in close contact with, including his teammate, were tracked, re-tested and subsequently quarantined.
