Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto and Mima Ito concluded the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender competition in Doha with singles titles, following expected wins in their respective finals.

At 17 years old, world number four Harimoto was the firm favourite in the men's singles, but faced the great experienced underdog of the tournament, Germany's Ruwen Filus, in the final.

With a couple of big wins under his belt in Qatar, Filus put up a strong fight, but Harimoto would win in six games 11-9, 11-9, 12-14, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8.

In the women's singles, world number two Ito came from a game down to claim the title against Singapore's Feng Tianwei by a score of 10-12, 12-10, 11-7, 11-8, 11-6.

The world number 12 made it to her first final in a few years, but could not turn it into a win against one of the favourites for the Olympic gold, with Ito set to compete in front of a home crowd at Tokyo 2020.

Ito won her second title in two weeks following her victory in the WTT Star Contender in Doha last week.

Chinese Taipei's Cheng I-Ching and Lin Yun-Ju won the mixed doubles title following a 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6 victory over South Korea's Jeon Ji-hee and Lee Sang-su.

This was Lee's second match in a row, off the back of winning the men's doubles with South Korean Jeoung Young-sik against Spain's Alvaro Robles and Romania's Ovidiu Ionescu in maximum games 2-11, 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 11-3.

Jeon also played two matches in a day, losing the mixed doubles after winning the women's doubles with South Korea's Shin Yu-bin in straight games 11-4, 12-10, 11-8 against Japan's Kasumi Ishikawa and Miu Hirano.

With the conclusion of the tournament, Doha is now set to host the World Singles Qualification Tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics from March 14 to 17.

There will be four men's singles and five women's singles spots available for the Games.
