Nothing can separate Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa as they both won races on day three to keep this year’s America’s Cup tied at 3-3 in Auckland.

Like yesterday, Italian challengers Luna Rossa took the lead with victory in race five before Team New Zealand responded once again to level proceedings.

Luna Rossa finished the first contest of the day in 29min 4sec to win by 18 seconds but any hopes of building on that were soon extinguished by the home team.

Team New Zealand roared back to cross the finish line in an impressive time of 27:27, winning the race by almost two minutes.

"The starts were pretty contrasting, but we were really pleased with how we kept in the race in the first one," said Pete Burling, helmsman for Team New Zealand.

"I thought we did a lot better job keeping in contact but we didn’t have any good opportunities to get past and then we showed what the boat can actually do in the second race."

Francesco Bruni, co-helmsman of Luna Rossa, said he was pleased to remain all-square with Team New Zealand with four days to go.

"We are facing the best team with a shot of winning which is amazing for us and we will keep fighting hard," said Bruni.

"It is a split-second decision, sometimes you are too early to the line, other times you are too late and if the wind increases or decreases by just half a knot the difference is 20 seconds so it is very hard.

"It is the same for both teams as we feel we could have more points on the scoreboard but at the same time we understand how hard it is."

The opening weekend of racing in the America's Cup was postponed due to the enforcement of a COVID-19 lockdown in Auckland.

Competition had originally been scheduled to start on March 6.

It is due to conclude on March 15.

The winner will be the first team to score seven points.

Action is scheduled to continue tomorrow with two more races.
