Karatekas from Iran claimed three places in finals on the second day of action at the Karate-1 Premier League event in Istanbul, Turkey.

In the male Kumite +84 kilograms category, Grand Winner Sajad Ganzjadeh booked his spot in the final after edging Gogita Arkania of Georgia by decision after a scoreless fight.

Ganzjadeh will face Ryzvan Talibov of Ukraine in the final.

In the male Kumite -84kg category, Asian champion Zabiollah Poorshab continued Iran’s success by narrowly overcoming Croatia’s Ivan Kvesic 2-2.

Poorshab will face Daniyar Yuldashev of Kazakhstan who caused one of the day’s biggest upsets by beating one of the big home hopes Grand Winner Ugur Aktas of Turkey 2-1.

In the female Kumite -61kg category, world champion Jovana Prekovic of Serbia made her first Karate-1 Premier League final for more than two years as she beat Shima Aleesadi of Iran 6-3.

Prekovic will face another Iranian karateka in the final in Rozita Alipourkeshka after she overcame Merve Coban of Turkey 1-1.

The Male Kata final, like its female equivalent, will see an all European final between Turkey and Spain.

Ali Sofuglu of Turkey qualified for the final after dominating his pool with a score of 27, while world ranking leader Damian Quintero of Spain reached the final after winning his pool with a score of 26.14.

Another Turkish karateka qualified for a final in the female Kumite +68kg category, with Meltem Hocaoglu Akyol beating Clio Ferracuti of Italy 11-8.

Akyol will face Kazakhstan’s Sofya Berultseva in the final after she beat Johanna Kneer of Germany 6-4 by ippon in her last four encounter.

Another of the day’s big upsets came in the female Kumite -68kg category when Italy’s Silvia Semeraro defeated Grand Winner and current world champion Irina Zaretska of Azerbaijan 5-3.

Semeraro will face African champion Feryal Abdelaziz of Egypt who narrowly beat Montenegro’s Marina Rakovic 2-1.
