Ukraine captured two gold medals on the opening day of the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in Al Ain thanks to sharp shooting from Yurii Stoiev and Oleksii Denysiuk.

Stoiev achieved the first of those when he won the R3 mixed 10-metre air rifle prone SH1 contest at the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates.

The Ukrainian accumulated a score of 252.3 points to secure the victory ahead of Italian Massimo Croci who finished on 250.6.

Third place went to Thailand’s Mala Sihabandit who recorded 227.7 to deny Erhan Coskuner a medal after the Turkish player scored 206.9.

Spaniard Juan Antonio Saavedra Reinaldo and Indian Sidhartha Babu took the next two spots after registering 185.2 and 165.4 respectively.

The top eight also featured Iryna Shchetnik of Ukraine and home shooter Saif Alnuaimi.

Ukraine enjoyed more success on day one when Denysiuk came out on top in the P3 mixed 25m pistol SH1 event.

Denysiuk clinched victory with a score of 30 as Turkey’s Muharrem Korhan Yamaç came second with 24 and India’s Rahul Jakhar was third with 21.

Iryna Liakhu of Ukraine missed out on a medal after recording 15 to finish fourth ahead of Hungary’s Gyula Gurisatti who scored 11.

The next three places were taken by Turkey’s Murat Oguz on seven, Hungary’s Krisztina David on four and Croatia’s Damir Bošnjak on three.

The Al Ain World Cup is the first World Shooting Para Sport event in more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with P1 men’s 10m air pistol SH1 and R9 mixed 50m rifle prone SH2.
