Nizhny Tagil to host back-to-back FIS Women’s Ski Jumping World Cup events

Nizhny Tagil will host the penultimate event of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Women’s Ski Jumping World Cup season.

Competition is set to begin at the Russian venue tomorrow, with two days of normal hill action planned.

The event forms part of the Blue Bird Russian Tour, which will conclude with large hill competitions next week in Chaikovsky.

Slovenia’s Nika Kriznar heads into the event with a narrow lead in the World Cup standings.

Kriznar tops the overall World Cup leaderboard with 611 points after nine competitions this season.

Japan’s Sara Takanashi lies second in the standings on 606 points.

The event will be the first World Cup competition since the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf.

Slovenia’s Ema Klinec was crowned normal hill world champion, while Norway’s Maren Lundby earned the large hill title.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
