The surprise results continued as the World Golf Championships (WGC)-Match Play reached the knockout stage in Austin, Texas.

After a group stage full of shocks only one of the top 20 seeds advanced to the round of 16 - Spain’s Jon Rahm - and the third seed was defeated in the quarter-finals by Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler took the lead on the second hole and managed five birdies during a 3&1 win.

Scheffler, the 30th seed, had earlier recorded a 6&4 win over England’s Ian Poulter in his round of 16 match.

Scheffler will face fellow American Matt Kuchar in the last four tomorrow, after the 52nd seed recorded a 2&1 win against 54th seed Brian Harman.

Kuchar took the lead on the first hole and managed five birdies on his way to victory against his compatriot, following on from a one up win against another American Jordan Spieth earlier in the day.

The closest match of the day came between American Billy Horschel, the 32nd seed, and Tommy Fleetwood of England, the 21st seed, with Horschel triumphing at the first extra hole - the only time he was ahead in the whole contest.

Fleetwood led through the opening three holes and was ahead from the ninth to the 16th, before a birdie from Horschel on 17 levelled the contest.

After the 18th and final hole of regulation play was halved the contest continued, with a par enough for Horschel to seal victory at the 19th, after Fleetwood bogeyed it.

Earlier in the day, Horschel had secured his quarter-final place by beating another American Kevin Streelman 3&1.

Flying the flag for Europe on the final day in Texas will be Victor Perez of France who beat Spain’s Sergio Garcia 4&3.

Garcia started strongly taking the lead after a birdie at the opening hole, but Perez dominated from then on with four birdies, combined with four bogeys from Garcia during the round, helping the Frenchman seal victory with three holes to spare.

Earlier in the day, Perez booked his spot in the quarter-finals with another comprehensive win, overcoming Robert MacIntyre of Scotland 5&4.

The semi-finals - Perez against Horschel, and Kuchar up against Scheffler, are scheduled to take place tomorrow morning, with the final set to follow in the later in the day.
