Maureen_NisimaNovember 15 - Just days after being crowned the new world fencing champion, Maureen Nisima has thrust her weight behind the Annecy 2018 bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Nisima, who won her first individual world Epée title at the Grand Palais in Paris last week, already has an impressive record, winning two world team titles in 2005 and 2008.

"The chance to take part in international competitions in France is a tremendous opportunity in any French athlete's career," she said.

"Winning this gold medal at the Grand Palais in Paris, with the entire public behind me, was truly exceptional.

"Having gone through such an experience, I can only wish the same for every French athlete, winning an international competition in front of their home crowd and in such a magical setting.

"That's why I've decided to add my support to Annecy 2018, a bid which has all it takes for unique Olympic and Paralympic Games, where sportswomen and men from France and across the world will be able to demonstrate their talents to the full."

Florence Masnada, double Olympic medallist in Alpine skiing and Annecy 2018's Ambassador to the sporting world, said: "Driven on by the thrill of a major sporting event and, without any doubt, by the unfailing support of the public, Maureen put in an extraordinary performance in the magical surroundings of the Grand Palais to carry off her first individual world title.

"Her support once again shows how the Annecy 2018 project is backed by sportswomen and men who want to play their part in helping France organise major international competitions and, in particular, the greatest one of all, the Olympic and Paralympic Games."
