Sambists in Nicaragua held a demonstration of the martial art in the Central American country's capital city Managua.

Students and teachers watched athletes perform sambo techniques at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua.

The demonstration took place on the first day of the academic year.

Kai Useda, the President of the Nicaraguan Sambo Federation, said the university and the sport would soon forge closer links.

This includes the opening of a sambo school, where local students will be able to hone their skills.

Sambo was introduced in Nicaragua in 2013, when Amaru Flores arrived in the country from El Salvador.

The country competed at the Pan American Championships for the first time in the same year, winning 15 medals including one gold in Panama.

Two athletes from Nicaragua, Nancys Castillo and Sayra Laguna, then competed at the 2013 Sambo World Championships in Saint Petersburg.
