The SDGs action campaign was established by the United Nations secretary-general with the aim of bringing people together from around the world to hold decision-makers to account.

Since 2019, the International Paralympic Committee and the UN SDG have worked in partnership to increase awareness of inclusion and ensuring people with disabilities have the chance to have a say on matters that concern them.

"Sport shows ability, not disability!" said Marina Ponti, global director of the UN SDG action campaign.

"It has empowered individuals and communities and amplified the message of equality and the value of diversity.

"We can’t deny the power of sports in tackling inequalities.

"Disability inclusion should be central to any plans when we talk about turning things around for the SDGs, and I applaud the success of all participants in this important Championship."

"Para sport is a strong platform to promote the values of diversity and inclusion and protecting the water is something we hold in our DNA, so we feel strongly connected to the SDGs."

Just under 400 athletes from 47 nations are set to compete at the Championships, scheduled to take place from May 16 to 22 in Madeira, Portugal, the largest para-swimming competition due to take place before the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

The Championships were initially scheduled to take place from May 17 to 23 2020 before being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As an open event, athletes from all continents are able to take part in the event, which is being held at the Complexo Olimpico de Piscinas da Penteada.
