Gregorio Paltrinieri was among the nation's star performers and earned a first major title in open water as he won the men's 5 kilometres.

A Rio 2016 gold medallist in the pool, Paltrinieri beat France's Marc-Antoine Olivier by 1.8sec.

Fellow Italian Dario Verani was 3.3 off the leader's pace to collect a bronze medal.

The winning time was 55min 43.3sec.

The Netherlands' Sharon van Rouwendaal - the Olympic champion over 10km - won the women's 5km race in 58:45.2.

Italy's Giulia Gabbrielleschi was second and Océane Cassignol of France third.

Back inside the Duna Arena, Russia won both artistic swimming events.

Twenty-year-old Varvara Subbotina took the solo free crown, with Ukrainian Marta Fiedina - victorious in the solo technical 24 hours beforehand - the runner-up.

Greece's Evangelia Platanioti was third.

Russia won the team technical event as well, with Ukraine second and Spain third.

Italy were back to winning ways in diving as Chiara Pellacani and Matteo Santoro triumphed in the mixed 3m springboard synchronised event.

Santoro, who who born in 2006, is just 14, and his partner is 18.

They scored 300.69 points, with German pair Lou Massenberg and Tina Punzel second on 294.27 and Russia's Ilia Molchanov and Vitaliia Koroleva third.

There was at least German gold in the men's 1m springboard contest.

Patrick Hausding was a runway winner, with 427.75 points compared to second-placed Jack Laugher's 402.90.

Giovanni Tocci of Italy came third, 0.4 points behind Britain's Laugher.
