Sweden opened their defence of the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship with an 8-4 win against Finland in group-stage play.

Oskar Eriksson is this year playing with former world junior champion Almida de Val, and together they ensured Sweden made a winning start to the event in Aberdeen in Scotland.

Sweden are in Group B, along with nine other nations, and only the top three will advance.

Top spot earns a place in the semi-finals, while the teams in second and third will play the Group A runner-up and third-place finisher for a place in the last four.

Also in Group B this evening, the United States beat China 11-3, Norway enjoyed a similarly one-sided win against New Zealand, triumphing 10-1, the Swiss defeated England 8-5 and Estonia were 10-3 victors against Japan.

In Group A, the host nation emerged 7-4 winners versus Italy.

"We just played great, which I’m pretty pleased with - it’s nice to come out playing like that in our first game," said Scotland's Bruce Mouat.

The Czech Republic defeated Australia 9-3 Australia, South Korea won 6-5 against RCF and Germany saw off Hungary 8-5.

Spain threatened an upset against Canada and burst into a 4-0 lead, but ultimately lost 8-6.

Each team is scheduled to play two games tomorrow.
