Holders Finland got the defence of their International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men's World Championship to a winning start as they beat the United States 2-1.

All the goals came in the second period of the Group B game at the Arena Riga, with Finland opening up a two goal lead courtesy of Atte Ohtamaa and Iiro Pakarinen.

Jason Robertson pulled a goal back for the US but it was not enough to prevent third seeded Finland from securing victory.

The day’s final game in Group B saw Kazakhstan beat hosts Latvia in a shootout after their match finished 2-2 following overtime.

Lauris Darzins gave Latvia the lead before Alexander Shin levelled as the teams exchanged goals in the second period.

Rihards Bukarts gave Latvia the lead again in the third period before Jesse Blacker drew the Czech Republic level again.

No goals were scored in overtime, sending the contest to penalties, which Kazakhstan won to complete a 3-2 overall win.

Germany ran out convincing winners in the group as they beat Norway 5-1.

Matthias Plachta scored late in the first period to give Germany the lead, before the Germans took control of the contest in the second period.

Three goals in a devastating ten-minute spell from Leon Gawanke, Leonhard Pfoderl and Lukas Reichel put the Germans in control at 4-0.

Emil Lilleberg reduced Norway’s deficit with four minutes remaining before Germany put the seal on a comfortable victory in period three thanks to Lean Bergmann, which made the score 5-1.

Denmark beat Sweden 4-3 in an entertaining game in Group A at the Olympic Sports Centre.

After a scoreless opening period, Carl Klingberg opened the scoring for Sweden in the 22nd minute before Nicklas Jensen levelled up on the half hour mark.

A frantic period continued with Henrik Tommernes putting Sweden back in front 2-1 in the 35th minute.

Denmark responded with two goals in a minute from Jensen and Emil Kristensen as they ended the period with a 3-2 lead.

Jensen scored his third for the Danes in the third period to extend their advantage to 4-2, before Klingberg’s second of the game for Sweden reduced the arrears to 4-3.

Elsewhere in the group, Russia recorded a thumping 7-1 win over Britain.

Russia wrapped up the game early on thanks to a blistering start that saw them score four goals in the first 11 minutes, courtesy of Mikhail Grigorenko, Sergei Tolchinski and a double for Anton Burdasov.

Liam Kirk pulled a goal back late on for Britain before Pavel Karnaukhov restored Russia’s four goal advantage with their only goal of the second period.

Further goals in period three from Andrei Kuzmenko and Anton Slepyshev added gloss to the scoreline for the Russians.

The final game of the day in the group saw Switzerland beat the Czech Republic 5-2, despite the Czechs taking the lead in the first period through Filip Chytal.

Sweden then took a hold on the game thanks to goals from Gregory Hofmann, Tristan Scherwey and a double from Timo Meier as they opened up a 4-1 lead.

Jiri Smejkal pulled one back for the Czech Republic with just under five minutes remaining but any hopes of a comeback ended when Hofmann scored his second late in the game.

Russia top Group A with two wins from their opening two games, giving them six points, while Germany lead Group B with two wins out of two, and also a six point haul.
