Hosts Senegal started the defence of their Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations title with a convincing victory over Uganda on the opening day of action in Saly.

In the day’s only game in Group A, Senegal ran out 5-1 winners to send out a message to their rivals as they look to win the tournament for the third time in succession and the sixth time in their history.

Just three teams now feature in Group A following the withdrawal of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with Tanzania starting their campaign against Uganda tomorrow, where the Sand Cranes will look to bounce back from today’s defeat.

The first of the day’s Group B games saw Mozambique register a surprise 7-5 win over Egypt, who are looking to improve on the third places finishes they have achieved at the last two editions of the tournament.

The day’s other game in the group saw Morocco, considered one of the favourites for the event, overcome the Seychelles 5-1.

Mozambique and Morocco now head Group B, with Mozambique having the opportunity to potentially take control of the group tomorrow when they take on the Seychelles.

Action is taking place at the Saly Beach Soccer Stadium, a temporary facility constructed especially for this competition.

The stadium has capacity for 1,000 spectators, with strict health protocols in place throughout the competition due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The tournament is due to conclude on Saturday May 29, with the two teams that reach the final qualifying to represent Africa at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, scheduled to be held in Moscow from August 19 to 29.
