The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) and USA Climbing have confirmed an athlete tested positive for COVID-19 before a World Cup in Salt Lake City.

A total of 150 tests were conducted by the organisations on Monday (May 24).

The IFSC said that technical delegate Graeme Alderson implemented the organisation’s response following the confirmed positive test.

It added that it was working with USA Climbing and Utah state authorities to address the case.

Athletes are currently in Utah ahead of the second of two back-to-back IFSC World Cup competitions in Salt Lake City, with the second beginning on Friday (May 28).

The three-day event will conclude on Sunday (May 30).

The IFSC said the organisations would work to protect the health of athletes, team staff, IFSC and USA Climbing officials and staff members, and all the parties involved.

Boulder and speed competitions will be held at the event.

It will be the first time a city has hosted consecutive weekends of IFSC World Cup competition.
