Belgrade could host the European Universities Games in 2023 after this year's event in the Serbian capital was postponed indefinitely because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The European University Sports Association (EUSA) confirmed last month that the Games could not be rescheduled this year due to the ongoing uncertainty caused by the virus.

Pushing the event into 2022 is not an option as Lodz in Poland is due to host the Games next year, and the EUSA does not want to move this from the calendar.

A plan to squeeze in Belgrade's hosting in 2023, before the 2024 Games in Debrecen-Miskolc in Hungary, was discussed as the EUSA Executive Committee gathered online for its fourth meeting of the year.

"The EC members discussed various possibilities surrounding the hosting of the European Universities Games in Belgrade, Serbia in 2023," a EUSA statement said.

"The Committee's decision and official communication will be made public in the coming weeks."

Other discussions at the meeting included a progress report on the 2022 Games In Lodz.

A EUSA delegation is due to travel to Poland next week to meet with the local Organising Committee.

This year's elective General Assembly in Budapest, which is due to be held on September 10 and 11, was also discussed, as well as the bidding process for the 2025 European Universities Championships.
