Uzoamaka Otuadinma and Ifeoma Dennis Juliet made the epic journey through six countries as the Nigerian Taekwondo Federation was unable to fund their travel to Senegal.

Otuadinma, the African Games champion in the under-73 kilograms division in 2015, and continental bronze medallist Juliet needed seven days to reach the Championships.

After travelling from their homes they met in Lagos on May 25, before journeying across Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso and Mali before arriving in Senegal.

The trip involved numerous bus changes and "many challenges" along the way, including difficulties at check points.

However, there was also "enjoyable" moments such as seeing wild animals in their natural habitats.

Both athletes arrived just in time for the competition weigh-in, but as each had swollen feet it is perhaps unsurprising that neither won a medal.

Choue was so impressed, however, that he arranged for World Taekwondo to pay for the athletes' flights back to Nigeria.

He praised both for their "taekwondo spirit in overcoming challenges" during a video call.

The South Korean added that World Taekwondo can offer support by providing equipment if the athletes make a request.
