Argentina have been eliminated from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women's AmeriCup after more positive COVID-19 tests saw them forfeit two group-stage matches.

Argentina had played two matches at the tournament in San Juan, recording a win against the Dominican Republic in Group B before suffering a defeat to hosts Puerto Rico on June 12.

Their match against Venezuela on June 13 was postponed after members of the Argentina delegation returned "inconclusive" COVID-19 test results.

FIBA has confirmed additional tests were conducted on Argentine delegation ahead of yesterday’s match against the United States, ultimately resulting in the team being excluded.

"More members of the delegation tested positive, and with the health and safety of players, coaches and officials being the primary consideration, the decision was made not to play Argentina games vs Venezuela and USA," a FIBA statement read.

"Argentina will lose these two games by forfeit and according to the official basketball rules, if in a tournament the team forfeits for the second time, the team shall be disqualified from the tournament and the results of all games played by this team shall be nullified.

"The remaining four teams of Group B, USA, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic will advance to quarter-finals starting on June 17.

"FIBA will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and communicate any further updates regarding its competitions if necessary."

The US team finished top of Group A after recording three consecutive wins, with Puerto Rico second despite their victory over Argentina being scrapped from the record.

The hosts enjoyed wins over the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, alongside their loss to the US.

Venezuela finished third in the group after beating the Dominican Republic 77-66 in the final match.

Group A concluded without any COVID-19-related issues, with Canada finishing top of the standings after a 74-40 success against Colombia saw them record a fourth consecutive victory.

Brazil and Colombia finished second and third respectively.

The US Virgin Islands secured the final quarter-final spot after recording their first win of the group stage, with a 85-44 triumph over El Salvador consigning their opponents to finishing bottom of the standings.

Quarter-finals will begin tomorrow with Group A winners Canada facing the Dominican Republic, while Puerto Rico take on Colombia.

The US, the Group B winners and defending champions, will meet the US Virgin Islands.

The winners of the tie will face either Brazil of Venezuela in the semi-finals.
