Olympic gold medallist Denis Gargaud Chanut and reigning world champion Andrea Herzog triumphed on the final day of the International Canoe Federation Canoe Slalom World Cup in Markkleeberg.

Chanut took the men's C1 honours and Herzog won the women's C1 event at the last major canoe slalom competition before the delayed Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Frenchman Chanut, who will be unable to defend his title at Tokyo 2020 after failing to qualify, secured victory in a time of 94.75sec with zero penalties.

The 33-year-old finished more than two seconds clear of Greek rival Sideris Tasiadis, who earned silver in 96.87.

Slovenia's Benjamin Savsek did enough for bronze after completing the course in 99.59.

"I am having nightmares every day about Tokyo," said Chanut.

"It’s not an easy situation, but it’s like that, I have to be a sportsman and show fair play, but it is going to hurt.

"I have to see how my head reacts to Tokyo.

"I can’t make any long term plans.

"I’m going to watch the Olympics, but I’m not sure I will be able to watch the canoe slalom event, because I feel great, I can not defend my title, I am European champion, now I win a World Cup, so it is going to be a sad moment for me for sure."

Herzog enjoyed success on home soil as she topped the podium in the women's C1 in 1min 03.91sec.

The German world champion, the only athlete not to record any penalties in the competition, ended the event nearly five seconds clear of the rest of the field.

Tereza Fiserova of the Czech Republic was 4.35 adrift in second place, while bronze went to Austria’s Nadine Weratschnig in 1:12.80.
