Serbia and France topped their groups with unbeaten records after the first phase of the International Basketball Federation Women’s EuroBasket tournament, which determined the line-up for the quarter-finals and the knockout round.

Belarus finished top of Group A and secured their quarter-final place ahead of Spain on points difference after defeating Sweden 54-78.

Co-hosts Spain overcame Slovakia 93-61 in the group’s other contest at the Pabellon Municipal Fuente de San Luis in Valencia.

Spain and Sweden advance to the knockout round after finishing second and third respectively in the group, and have to win an extra game to reach the last eight, with Sweden finishing third in the group on points difference from Slovakia.

Serbia topped Group B, which also took place in Valencia, winning a third straight game in beating Montenegro 87-75 to go unbeaten.

Italy finished in second place after beating Greece 77-67, with Montenegro finishing third in the group to secure a knockout round spot.

Group C, played at the Rhenus Sport in Strasbourg ended as the tightest of the lot with Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia all finishing with records of two wins and one loss and five points.

Belgium topped the group on points difference, advancing automatically to the last eight after edging out Turkey 63-61.

Slovenia defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 91-81, with the teams finishing in third and second places respectively to both advance to the knockout round.

In Group D, co-hosts France finished top with an unbeaten record of three wins from as many matches, after comfortably overcoming Russia 85-59.

Russia finished second to advance to the knockout round along with Croatia who beat the Czech Republic 84-56.

Group winners Belarus, Serbia, Belgium and France will next be in action on Wednesday (June 23), with their opponents to be decided in tomorrow’s knockout round matches for the second and third place finishers.

The two knockout matches in Valencia see Italy take on Sweden and Spain face Montenegro, while in Strasbourg Bosnia and Herzegovina take on Croatia and Russia are up against Slovenia.
