The World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) event in Hamburg, originally due to take place in July but postponed earlier this month due to COVID-19 concerns, is now scheduled for September 18 to 19.

With the date now falling after the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Finals Edmonton, Hamburg becomes the first WTCS race counting towards the 2022 World Championship titles.

The same points situation will apply to the 2021 WTCS Bermuda event taking place with Sprint & Mixed Relay World Championships on October 16 to 17 and the WTCS Abu Dhabi on November 5 to 6.

World Triathlon will announce the complete calendar for the 2022 season later in the year.

After the postponement of WTCS Hamburg a month ago, World Triathlon, the Deutschland Triathlon Union and the local organisers have been looking for new dates to accommodate the event not only for the elite athletes, but also for the age groupers.

"All parties are conscious that there are other events which might be of interest to the elite athletes on the same weekend but, unfortunately, the ongoing impact of the pandemic has meant that this was the only possible window for the event to take place," World Triathlon said.

Marisol Casado, the World Triathlon President, said: "Hamburg is one of the most prestigious races in our calendar, loved both by spectators and athletes alike, and we are delighted to see it back in the calendar for another year.

"The 2021 Hamburg Wasser WTCS will also be the kickoff for the new season, and I am sure that the event will not disappoint and the organisers will once again deliver a magnificent event."

Martin Engelhardt, President of the Deutschland Triathlon Union, said: "The Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon has a very special significance for Triathlon Germany.

"Therefore, I am very happy that a new date could now be found in coordination with the city of Hamburg with all the challenges that still have to be mastered at the moment.

"While last year only one competition for the elite could be held due to the pandemic situation, I am now especially happy for the many age group athletes who will get the opportunity to compete themselves this year after all."
