Dominican Republic claimed the first victory of the Baseball Final Qualifier for Tokyo 2020 over Venezuela, after relying on a great seventh inning to put them in control.

After hitting back-to-back home runs in the inning, the team scored five on their way to a 10-7 win in Puebla in Mexico, meaning they started their qualification campaign for next month's Olympics positively.

Of the three teams at the qualifier, only the winner will book their place at the Games.

Australia, previous hosts Chinese Taipei and China all withdrew from the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the first six frames, there were six home runs between the two sides.

But, unfortunately for Venezuela in hindsight, all five of these were solo blasts for one run.

Dominican Republic trailed 6-5 before the seventh inning, when rising star Juan Francisco hit a home run to allow himself and Julio Rodriguez to score and give their team the lead.

The lead increased when Johan Mieses hit a home run moments later, and Diego Goris then got his second home run of the day.

Emilio Bonifacio and Gustavo Núñez both scored runs to give the Dominican Republic an even more comfortable cushion.

Venezuela face The Netherlands tomorrow at the Hermanos Serdan Baseball Stadium.
