Russia and Austria recorded double-digit wins while shutting out their opponents on day two of the Women's European Softball Championship in Venezia in Italy.

After just four innings, Russia claimed an 18-0 victory over Hungary.

With both sides without a run in the opening innings, Russia kicked down the door to score four in the second, nine in the third and five in the fourth.

Home runs from Nina Zakaznikova and Tatiana Pinigina contributed to five of those runs.

Austria handed down a 17-0 thumping to Lithuania, recovering from a heavy defeat yesterday to The Netherlands in Group B.

Austria wrapped up the win after just two innings, scoring a colossal 11 runs in the opener and adding six more in the second.

In the opening game of the day, Croatia went down to the wire against Denmark in Group C but emerged with a 3-2 success.

Rita Despot was integral to her side’s win, having hit a home run to left field to allow herself and Addison Kostrenchich to score the first runs of the game in the fourth inning.

A third was added in the fifth when Eowyn Marjanovic tripled to allow team mate Lara Kljucaric to score.

Denmark got back into the game in the sixth, with Cecilie Johansen first bunting to allow Kristina Nielsen to score, before scoring herself off a Carine Thorslund triple.

Poland’s Group A win against Bulgaria was much more decisive as they thrashing their opponents 10-0 in five innings.

Both Wiktoria Korykova and Raina Galbiati scored two runs, helping Poland to four in the second and fifth innings, respectively.

In the other Group C game, Israel’s four runs in the second inning helped them to a 5-4 win over the Czech Republic.

Veronika Klimplova scored in the opening inning to give the Czechs the lead, but they would lose it in the second after a series of hits helped four players reach home.

Both sides scored a run in the fourth and the Czechs gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Gabriela Slaba doubled to right centre to allow Klimplova and Tereza Kubicova to score a run each, but the comeback ended there.

In Group D, Spain came from behind to defeat France 10-2, with six runs in the fourth killing off the game that had been fairly tight before then.

France scored a run in the second and Spain replied with two and another two in the third.

Despite the French team pulling it back to 4-2, Spain's six runs - courtesy of great hits from Anna Sobrino and Maria Caicoya - put the game to bed.

Ukraine recorded a battling 8-7 triumph over Slovakia after finding themselves 3-0 down early on.

Poland and Italy in Group A, Israel in Group C and Spain in Group D so far are the only nations with two wins from two.

In the late games, Italy face Poland and Germany play The Netherlands.
