Chris Robertson has returned to England Squash after being appointed as talent and performance strategic lead in preparation for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The former world number two led England to podium success from 2011 to 2017 during his role as national coach and head of player development.

Under the Australian’s leadership, England picked up nine medals at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and won gold at the 2013 Men's World Team Championships.

After spending four years as Hong Kong head coach, Robertson has now rejoined England Squash where he is expected to work alongside national coach David Campion in leading the team and developing the talent pathway to achieve success on the European and world stages.

"It feels great to be back working with England Squash," said Robertson.

"I’m excited for the future of the talent and performance department and what it can achieve.

"I will use what knowledge and experience I have to help shape and develop the programme towards sustainable and aspirational success at all levels of the pathway."

During his playing career, Robertson won four world bronze medals in singles and secured a career-high ranking of world number two in 1992.

Robertson became Wales national coach in 1994 before going on to join England Squash in 2011, where he played a key role in supporting some of the country’s finest players, including three-time world champion Nick Matthew, double British Open champion Laura Massaro and former world number one James Willstrop.

Matthew was recently appointed as an assistant coach of England.

In 2017, Robertson left England Squash to head up coaching in Hong Kong and made an instant impact with the country winning bronze at the World Men’s Team Championships in his first year in the job.

Mark Williams, chief executive of England Squash, believes Robertson will help the nation deliver home success at next year’s Commonwealth Games in England.

"I am absolutely delighted to welcome Chris back as talent and performance strategic lead," said Williams.

"Over the years, we have seen first-hand the significant impact he can have on a performance programme through his experience in the sport and the quality of his leadership.

"Chris brings a vast amount of knowledge, ideas and a fresh perspective to this pivotal role, and has all the attributes necessary to take us forward, particularly as we prepare for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next year.

"I look forward to working with Chris to maintain our competitive edge and create a stronger, more sustainable high-performance programme that will continue to deliver success."
