World Triathlon and the German Triathlon Union confirmed the event would take place in Hamburg.

The city held the sole leg of the 2020 World Triathlon Series, which saw France's Vincent Luis and Britain's Georgia Taylor-Brown win the respective men's and women's titles.

It then staged the 2020 Triathlon Mixed Relay Championships over the same early September weekend.

"In the past almost 20 years, the Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon has developed into a lighthouse event with international radiance," said Andy Grote, Senator for the Interior of Sport.

"We have proven the high significance triathlon has for the city of Hamburg by staging the elite races under COVID conditions last year, which received worldwide attention.

"We hold that status high and even top that by hosting the 2023 World Championships."

Medals are due to be presented in nine events at the Championships, with elite athletes competing in an eliminator format in both sprint and mixed relay competitions.

"The experience that Hamburg has organising major triathlon events is unique," said World Triathlon President Marisol Casado.

"Hamburg has been one of the most special cities in our circuit.

"The spectators, the city, everything in Hamburg is just great.

"The athletes love it, the fans love it, the city has always been so welcoming for all of us, and Hamburg has a special link with the mixed relay.

"Some of our most successful events ever in our history have been here, and we can't be happier of coming back to Hamburg."

The city's World Triathlon Championship Series leg is also now set to take place in the 2021-2022 season after it was postponed due to COVID-19.
