Defending champions United States maintained their 100 per cent record in the International Basketball Federation Under-19 World Cup in Latvia tonight as they beat Australia 87-66 in their third and final Group D match.

That result at the Olympic Sports Centre in Riga left them top of the group and guaranteed one of the four top seeding positions now that all 16 teams involved will move forward to the knockout stages.

The holders will now meet South Korea, who finished bottom of Group C after losing 99-48 to Spain earlier today in Riga, in tomorrow’s round of 16.

Spain finished level on five points with France, who rounded off their group matches with an 89-52 win over Argentina.

But France finished top through a superior points difference and will next meet Mali, whose 58-54 defeat by Turkey today left them bottom of Group D.

Meanwhile Serbia finished top of Group B thanks to their hugely competitive 71-70 defeat of the hosts at the Daugavpils Olympic Center, and will now meet Japan, who finished bottom of Group A, being played at the same venue, following a 95-63 defeat by Lithuania.

An 85-56 win over Senegal confirmed Canada’s position at the top of Group A, and they will now play Puerto Rico, whose 81-68 defeat by Iran left them bottom of Group B.

Tomorrow’s round of 16 matches will be shared between the Riga and Daugavpils venues, and then the Olympic Sports Center will host the quarter-finals on Thursday (July 9).

The tournament is due to finish on Saturday (July 11).
