This International University Sports Federation (FISU) event, jointly overseen by the University of Innsbruck, Unisport Austria and the Austrian Climbing Federation, is due to take place from June 13 to 17 at the Kletterzentrum Innsbruck.

It will involve lead, boulder and speed disciplines.

"We are expecting over 250 athletes in Innsbruck and want to make the best possible use of the event in all areas," said Gernot Hupfauf, general manager of the Innsbruck 2022 FISU World University Championship Sport Climbing.

"At the Kletterzentrum Innsbruck, with its infrastructure that is unique in the world, we can offer the perfect setting.

"A little less than a year before the start, we are very well on track with the planning."

Elmar Pichl of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research added: "Austria as a whole is very active and successful in sport climbing.

"Therefore, it was obvious that we, together with the University of Innsbruck and the Climbing Federation Austria, submitted a bid for a FISU World University Championship Sport Climbing in the fall of 2019, which was followed by the FISU award in the same year."

The last major international university sports event in Austria was the Winter Universiade at Innsbruck and Seefeld in 2005, when 11 sports were involved and several records were broken at an event involving more than 1,000 athletes.

To date, FISU has hosted two World University Championships in Sport Climbing - in Shanghai in 2016 and in Bratislava in 2018.
