Defending champions Mexico began their Gold Cup title defence by playing out a goalless draw with Trinidad and Tobago in Arlington.

The Mexican team were dealt a blow earlier in the Group A match at the AT&T Stadium, with winger Hirving Lozano forced off through injury.

Lozano went down in the penalty area under pressure, with his head the colliding with the knee of the onrushing Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Marvin Phillip.

The 25-year-old was stretchered from the pitch, while Mexico saw appeals for a penalty waved away by the officials.

The Mexican Football Federation later confirmed that Lozano was "stable and conscious", with the winger set to be medically examined.

Mexico continued to dominate proceedings on the pitch, but were unable to find a way past Phillip.

The 36-year-old made a string of fine saves in both halves to keep the score level, including turn away a long range shot from Jesus Corona, which appeared destined for the top corner late on.

Mexico thought they had secured a breakthrough late on when Jesus Gallardo’s cross was diverted into the net, only for an offside to have been spotted in the build-up.

Over 10 minutes of injury time were played at the end of the match, after the referee briefly halted the tie.

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) said the match was halted due to discriminatory chanting as part of the organisation’s anti-discrimination protocol.

Homophobic chanting was heard from Mexican fans leading to the halt in play.

Mexico was last month ordered by FIFA to play its next to home matches behind closed doors as part of a punishment following homophobic chants at Olympic qualification matches.

Neither side were able to make the breakthrough in the final minutes, with both teams settling for a point.

Canada's Group B match against Martinique in Frisco will be the next tie contested in the group stage of the tournament.

Guatemala are due to face El Salvador tomorrow in Group A after being selected as late replacements for Curaçao, who were forced out of the tournament due to COVID-19 cases.
