Croatian Saša Martinović claimed a first-round victory at the Chess World Cup today by drawing his second game with Estonia's Kaido Külaots, setting up a meeting with world champion Magnus Carlsen in the second round.

Martinović was in pole position to advance to play Norway's Carlsen at this International Chess Federation event, and duly did so on day two.

Carlsen has been world number one for 10 consecutive years, having retaken the spot from India's Viswanathan Anand in July 2011.

Georgian 98th seed Baadur Jobava is also through after a draw in his second game with American prodigy Abhimanyu Mishra, who is just 12.

Mishra showed fight but was unable to take it to a decider, and now Jobava plays American 31st seed Sam Shankland in round two.

English 169th seed Ravi Haria was unable to finish off what would have been an upset against 88th seed - and 1997 world team champion - Vadim Zvjaginsev, after the Russian won the second game - taking it to the tiebreaker.

Similarly, Russians Boris Savchenko and Nikita Afanasiev are to play a third game after another draw today - with the winner to play fourth seed Anish Giri from The Netherlands.

The same applies in the match between Australian Bobby Cheng and Turkey's Vahap Sanal who tied again.

Third seed Levon Aronian of Armenia awaits the victor in round two.

Russian 51st seed Sanan Sjugirov - the highest-ranked player to compete in the first round - expectedly progressed with a 2-0 victory over Elmer Prudente of Guam.

He now plays Indian 78th seed Nihal Sarin, whose draw against Uganda's Arthur Ssegwanyi was enough to move into the second round.
