MainettiCare will provide high-performance facemasks for all Hong Kong athletes and Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong officials, under the deal.

The masks are effective for up to 96 hours, it is claimed, and have been entirely produced in Hong Kong.

"We’re extremely honoured that MainettiCare has been chosen to be the official face mask supplier to the Hong Kong, China Olympic Delegation at Tokyo 2020," Paul Tai, Far East regional director of MainettiCare, said.

"With sustainability being a key focal point Tokyo 2020, the flexibility of the HK96(TM) hide to be effective for 96 hours is a main feature and highlights Mainetti’s commitment to sustainability as part of its 60th Anniversary celebrations."

The masks feature adjustable straps and have been tested by Intertek to provide 98 per cent efficiency against bacteria, particle and viral filtration, it is said.

Tai added: "We are looking forward to the many proud moments that our local Olympians and Paralympians will provide. 

"We wish them every success as they depart for Japan."

Hong Kong will send 97 people to Tokyo, including 46 athletes participating in 13 sports.

Hong Kong is looking for its first gold medal in 25 years.

Lee Lai-shan's windsurfing triumph at Atlanta 1996 remains Hong Kong's only Olympic gold medal.

Lai-shan told the South China Morning Post: "Our table tennis, badminton and windsurfing athletes also stand a good chance of winning medals [at Tokyo 2020].

"Our gymnast, [Stone] Shek Wai-hung also has a good chance of a medal.

"The Hong Kong sporting scene is becoming more exciting with significant improvements at all ends.

"I have been following local sports news closely and also keep in contact with some of the athletes."

The Olympic Games are due to run from July 23 to August 8.
