Tennis player Petra Kvitova will carry the Czech Republic flag alongside basketball captain Tomas Satoransky at tonight’s Opening Ceremony here in Tokyo.

Kvitova, a Wimbledon winner in 2011 and 2014, won bronze at Rio 2016 and is competing in her fourth Olympics.

Satoransky is competing in his first Olympics.

"We have only just been told," Satoransky said.

"It's a great honour for me to get the trust of other athletes.

"I think I'll enjoy this moment wonderfully.

"I will probably be more nervous than before any match.

"The extraordinary thing for me is that we have qualified for the Olympics and we can be part of our delegation."

This is the first time the Czechs have qualified for the men’s basketball tournament.

They open against Iran on Sunday and also face France before concluding the preliminary phase against the United States of America.

Kvitova and Satoransky had only just met "in the elevator", the tennis grand slam winner said, but she believes they "can handle it".

There are two flagbearers as a result of an International Olympic Committee proposal to promote gender equality.

"I found out about this a few days ago," Kvitova added.

"It seems a good idea to me."

Grand slam winners Caroline Wozniacki, Rafa Nadal and Sir Andy Murray all carried the flag of their respective countries at Rio 2016.

The Czech Republic is expected to field a team of 116 athletes.

Team management has launched an investigation after five members tested positive for Covid following the flight to Tokyo.
