Rower Moran Samuel and boccia player Nadav Levi have been chosen as Israel's flag bearers for the upcoming Paralympic Games.

This is the first time that there will be two athletes carrying the nation's flag at the Paralympics.

Wheelchair tennis player Shraga Weinberg had the honour at the last Games whilst sport shooter Doron Shaziri and swimmer Yizhar Cohen were selected for the 2012 and 2008 editions, respectively.

Samuel was one of three Israeli medallists at the Rio 2016 Paralympics when she won a bronze medal in the ASW1x single sculls category.

The Karmiel native suffered a spinal stroke in 2006 leaving her lower body paralysed.

Samuel was a member of the Israel women's national basketball team before her stroke and then joined her country's wheelchair basketball team where she was the only woman on a men's team.

Her life partner, Limor Goldberg, persuaded her to try rowing in 2010.

Samuel then went on to represent Israel at London 2012 where she finished fifth.

She has also won a gold medal at both the 2015 World Championships and 2015 World Rowing Cup.

Nadav Levi is one of the founders of boccia in Israel and came fourth in the 2019 European Championship.

Levi has cerebral palsy and in 2019 worked with design students from Shenkar College of Engineering and Design to create adaptive clothing for himself and other Israeli Paralympic athletes.

Including Samuel and Levi, Israel will be taking 25 athletes to the Paralympics in Japan from August 24 to September 5.

Israel's Paralympic team has won 123 gold medals in their history with the last coming at London 2012 courtesy of wheelchair tennis player Noam Gershony.

Their best performance was at Montreal 1976 where they won 40 golds to put them third overall for the competition.
