Russian 19-year-old Ekaterina Mikhaylushkina, who dominated the Finswimming World Championships with five gold medals, has been named The World Games Athlete of the Month for July.

At the Championships in Tomsk in her home nation, Mikhaylushkina won three individual races and won two relay races too.

Her most impressive performance was in the women's 100 metres surface race, in which she improved her own world record.

Mikhaylushkina added a silver medal in the mixed relay after Russia were defeated by China, who set a new world record.


When she was only 15 years old at the 2017 World Games in Wrocław in Poland, Mikhaylushkina won two gold medals and one silver.

A few weeks later she won five gold and two silver medals at the World Junior Championships.

She is set to start as the favourite in finswimming at the Birmingham 2022 World Games in Alabama in the United States.

There will be 30 official sports, including 54 disciplines and 206 events.

The Birmingham 2022 World Games are set to take place from July 7 to 17 2022, after being postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were moved to 2021, the World Games were also moved back by a year to avoid a clash.
