Final line-ups in the sprint events have been decided at the Wildwater Canoeing European Championships in Sabero, with Czech and French athletes looking likely to win more medals.

In the women's K1 at the Spanish village, all three French athletes qualified for the final at the first time of asking by finishing in the required top five as Pauline Freslon led the, way pipping Slovenian Ana Steblaj to pole position by 0.79sec.

Mathilde Rosa of Italy - victorious in the K1 classic race earlier in the week - and compatriot Cecilia Panato, who won the classic C1 race, reached the final through the second round of heats.

The men's C1 was dominated by the Czech Republic and France as all five spots automatic spots in the final were occupied by the two countries.

Ondrej Rolenc, the Czech winner of the C1 classic race, was the top qualifier.

Nejc Žnidarčič led a trio of Slovenians into the next round of the men's K1 with a time of 36.79sec.

Felix Bouvet continued France's strong representation as he finished fourth out of 41, and compatriots Luca Barona and Maxence Barouh join him in tomorrow's final.


Marie Nemcova of the Czech Republic and Panato finished first and second, respectively, in the women's C1 sprint heats ahead of Elsa Gaubert, Helene Raguenes and Laura Fontaine of France.

Gaubert and Ragunes also showed their class in the women's C2 event, finishing the course in 48.66sec to outpace their British competition.

In the men's C2, France's Stephane Santamaria and Quentin Dazeur led a one-two finish with compatriots Pierre Troubady and Hugues Moret.

Tomorrow will see the final contested in all these disciplines, plus team finals.
