Four national bowls events in Australia have been cancelled with two more postponed as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in the nation.

Ongoing coronavirus restrictions, border closures, lockdowns and "uncertainties affecting many states across the nations" were cited by Bowls Australia as the reasons for the decision to cancel or postpone events.

It means this year’s Nationals tournament, which amalgamates six of the sport’s most revered competitions, will not go ahead entirely as originally planned.

The Australian Under-18 Championships, Australian Multi-Disability Championships, Australian Senior Sides Championships and Australian Sides Championships have all been called off.

Two qualifying events that make up the Nationals have been rescheduled to April next year where they will be held at the Broadbeach Bowls Club in the Gold Coast.

The Australian Champion of Champions is set to take place on April 23 and 24, followed by the Australian Championships from April 26 to 29.

Bowls Australia also confirmed that its annual awards night will be held virtually for the second successive year and will be postponed until November.

Coronavirus cases are on the rise in Australia with New South Wales and Victoria registering record high numbers of infections.

New South Wales confirmed 681 new cases over the past 24 hours with Victoria recording 57.
