The International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) 2021 Biathle/Triathle World Championships are set to begin tomorrow in Weiden in Germany.

The event is due to run until Sunday (August 29) in the Bavarian city.

World number one biathlete Christian Götz of Germany goes into the senior men's event as the favourite while young Egyptian duo Ahmed Hassan and Ahmed Abdelaziz are also expected to challenge.

Portugal's Tiago Sousa won the last senior men's race at the World Championships and as the third ranked triathle athlete he is one to watch.

In the senior women's race, German competitors are expected to dominate the field.

The top nine ranked female biathle and triathle athletes in the world all hail from the host country.

Vera Oettinger is ranked second and third in the biathle and triathle rankings respectively.

This makes the 27-year-old the only woman to feature in both tables as she goes into the event as one of the favourites.

The upcoming championships will be the first instalment of the event since the 2019 edition in Saint Petersburg in the United States.

The 2020 championships were cancelled due to COVID-19.

This year's event will be held with a single division in each category.

The unification of the elite and open divisions is aimed at crowning an undisputed world champion in biathle and triathle, covering all age groups from youth to masters.

It will also reduce the difficulty of managing the competition in line with the UIPM's Coronavirus Infection Prevention Guidelines for the organisers.
