Boxing Australia is to send only three fighters to this year's International Boxing Association (AIBA) Men's World Championships because of uncertainty brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Combat Institute of Australia has offered to meet the costs of entering the three Australians who competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics into AIBA's flagship event for men.

However, owing to "the uncertainty associated with international travel in 2021", Boxing Australia says it will not enter any more athletes for the World Championships.

Serbian capital Belgrade is due to host the World Championships from October 26 to November 6.

AIBA had planned to stage the Women’s World Championships in October as well, but a venue for this is yet to be announced, so Boxing Australia is proceeding on the basis that no such tournament will take place.

Harry Garside was the most successful of Australia's three men's boxers at Tokyo 2020, winning a lightweight bronze medal.

Alex Winwood and Paulo Aokuso exited the flyweight and light-heavyweight competitions at the round of 16 stage.

Australia won a lone bronze medal when Yekaterinburg hosted the last AIBA Men's World Championships in 2019.
