India's Asian Games champion Chandrasekhar Menon has died aged 85 from age-related health issues, with tributes pouring in to the former international footballer.

Chandrasekhar was part of the Indian football team that won the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games, and also competed at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

"It is saddening to hear that Mr. Chandrasekhar is no more," said President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Praful Patel.

"He was a key part of one of the most successful Indian teams ever and his contribution to the sport in India can never be forgotten.

"I share the grief."

India beat South Korea 2-1 in the 1962 final in Jakarta in Indonesia in front of an approximate 100,000-strong crowd.

It remains the last football gold medal won by India at the Asian Games.

"Chandrasekhar has been an inspiring figure for people across generations and won many laurels through his career," said Kushal Das, AIFF general secretary.

"I send my condolences to his family and pray for his soul to rest in peace."

Several members of India's winning side have died since last year, including D Ethiraj, Pradip Kumar Banerjee and captain Subimal Goswami.
