Alexey Sarana has taken over as the top-ranked player at the European Individual Chess Championship in Reykjavik, and is one of seven to have won all three games so far.

The Russian today overcame Vincent Keymer from Germany, who entered the match with a 100 per cent record.

Another German, Matthias Blübaum, had led after two days, but was held to a draw today.

Icelandic number one Hjörvar Steinn Grétarsson was equal to Blübaum in the day's standout fixture, leaving both with 2.5 points.

Niclas Huschenbeth is one German player who was successful, however, and his victory over Daniele Vocaturo leaves him second in the overall standings.

Two Armenians - Robert Hovhannisyan and Hovhannes Gabuzyan - Serbia's Velimir Ivić, Pole Kacper Piorun and the Russian Mikhail Antipov also have three points after three games.

The tournament is being played using the Swiss system, and is set to conclude on September 5 after 11 rounds.
