Munich_2018_ice_hockeyNovember 22 - Munich has strengthened its bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games by becoming an official partner to ice hockey's Deutschland Cup.

The city's Bid Committee saw its logo prominently displayed on the ice at the Olympic Hall as host nation Germany took the honours over Canada, Slovakia and Switzerland.

Three high-profile sports ambassadors made an appearance - on the ice Dennis Endras and Alois Schloder, and in the stand the latest addition to the Munich 2018 ambassadors' team, Nashville Predators' Marcel Goc.

Jürgen Bühl, managing director of the Bid Committee, said: "Munich 2018 is immensely proud to be associated with a sports tournament of this calibre.

"Creating the ideal conditions for elite athletic performance is the cornerstone of our bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2018, and we enjoyed sharing our vision and our expertise at the event this weekend.

"We are also delighted to have had the opportunity to demonstrate once again that Munich possesses the sports, transport and tourism infrastructure, as well as the wealth of experience, to stage this kind of event safely, effectively and, above all, with a friendly festival atmosphere."

As an additional display of support, two-time Olympic gold medallist Maria Riesch has joined the pro-Olympic forum, 'OlympiJa 2018', along with her fellow residents of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Munich 2018 sports ambassadors Rosi Mittermaier, Olympic skiing champion, and former Germany hockey goaltender Peppi Heiss.

Ice hockey is enjoying something of a purple patch in Germany at the moment following the overwhelming success of the IIHF World Championships earlier in the year.

EHC München frequently attract in excess of 6,000 ardent supporters to their home matches.

Following a successful presentation at the Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly in Guangzhou, the Munich 2018 Bid Committee is preparing for a pivotal presentation at the European Olympic Committee General Assembly in Belgrade on November 26, while at the same time finalising the Candidature File for submission to the IOC in January 2011.
